Suspended BIW union leaders face hearing

The ousted leaders of Bath Iron Works' largest union will face an internal hearing that begins today to determine whether any charges should be brought against them, one year after mismanagement allegations led to their suspension.

The three suspended Local S6 leaders -- President Mike Keenan, Chief Bath Steward Mike Cyr and Local Trustee Cathy London -- will appear before a three-member panel representing the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers to determine whether they should be charged, according to The Times Record. The IAMAW took over control of the local union last year to investigate allegations that included financial mismanagement and the viewing of pornography on union hall computers. The two-day hearing will determine whether to dismiss the charges against the leaders or to move forward with a trial, according to the paper. If a trial were to happen and a guilty verdict were found, the punishment could include a five-year ban from holding union office and from membership in good standing.

Keenen told the Associated Press he didn't expect to be treated fairly by the panel, and union spokesman John Upham told The Times Record the hearing was a "kangaroo court." A lawsuit Keenan, Cyr, London and former Vice President Troy Osgood filed last year against the IAMAW is still pending.
