Hedge fund investor S. Donald Sussman, a majority shareholder of the Portland Press Herald and husband of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, has been named to a national hall of fame for the hedge fund industry.
The Press Herald reported Sussman was inducted alongside six others this year into the Institutional Investor’s Alpha Hedge Fund Hall of Fame. He joins the likes of George Soros and James Simons, who are also members of the hall of fame started in 2008.
Amanda Cantrell, the managing editor of the trade publication Institutional Investor’s Alpha, told the paper that Sussman was named to the hall of fame in part for pioneering a “seeding model” of investing — that is, giving seed money to budding businesses in exchange for a stake in the company’s success.
Since starting his Greenwich, Conn.-based Paloma Partners in 1981, Sussman has generated a 12.7% annual return for its investors, the paper reported. The firm manages around $2 billion in assets.
