S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. in Hermon has acquired numerous companies throughout New England within the past two decades.

Its latest acquisition is Paul B. Aldinger & Associates Inc. of East Providence, R.I.

The new entity will be called Aldinger & Associates and will operate as a division of S.W. Cole. Paul Aldinger, who founded Paul B. Aldinger & Associates in 1990 to provide geotechnical engineering and laboratory testing services to clients in southern New England, will continue to work at the firm.

Cole hired four geotechnical engineers from Aldinger.

“As a division of S.W. Cole, the East Providence office will have expanded geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and subsurface exploratory drilling capabilities, and a network of offices and team members throughout New England to help efficiently cover our client’s projects,” Robert Chaput Jr., CEO of S.W. Cole, said in a news release.

S.W. Cole was founded in 1979. The firm has about 140 team members at nine offices across New England and provides geotechnical engineering, subsurface exploratory drilling, construction materials testing and special inspections services. It also provides subsurface exploratory drilling services from four locations in New England, including Riverside, R.I. Each of its nine offices has laboratories that provide physical testing of concrete, soil, aggregates and asphalt.

The acquisition provides Aldinger with access to Cole’s menu of construction materials testing and exploratory drilling services.

“This new chapter in our firm’s history really opens up a lot of possibilities for our existing and future clients,” Aldinger said.

The acquisition marks Cole’s second foray into Rhode Island in the past year. The firm acquired Geisser Engineering of Riverside in May 2022, which also operates as a Cole division.

Cole has a history of performing project work in Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts, making it natural to expand its geotechnical engineering capabilities in this region, said Chad Michaud, Cole’s COO.

He added that Rhode Island has “a very lively market” for the firm’s services.

Cole started focusing on acquisitions in 2013 as part of a strategic growth initiative, Chaput previously told Mainebiz. The goal was to provide new opportunities for employees.
