A former Kmart store in Auburn, shuttered since 2019, will get new life as a branch of retailer Target Corp.
A lease on the vacant building, at 603 Center St., is one of five transferred from Transformco Properties to Minneapolis-based Target (NYSE: TGT), according to a news release Friday. Terms were not disclosed. On Monday, a Target representative confirmed to Mainebiz that the company has leased the property.
Transformco is a private, Illinois-based holding company that acquired many Sears and Kmart stores nationwide after the Sears parent company filed for bankruptcy in 2018.
Target, the eighth-largest retailer in the U.S., has already promoted its planned Auburn store on its website. The branch will cover 105,000 square feet, spokeswoman Jill Lewis said.
“We’re excited to bring an easy, safe and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the community with this new Target store,” she said. “As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”
The new Target location is less than 2 miles from downtown Auburn. Target has other Maine locations in Biddeford, South Portland, Topsham, Augusta and Bangor.
