Task force to find $25M in state cuts
Gov. Paul LePage has appointed 11 people to a task force charged with finding $25 million in savings for the $6.1 billion budget passed in June.
The two-year budget included a $25 million hole to be filled by recommendations of the Streamline and Prioritize Core Government Services Task Force, made up of a mix of legislators, former lawmakers and members of the business community, according to the Bangor Daily News. The task force members include: Sen. Richard Rosen, R-Bucksport; Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York; Rep. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake; Rep. Dennis Keschl, R-Belgrade; former Central Maine Power Co. CEO David Flanagan, David Winslow of the Maine Hospital Association and Ryan Low, former finance commissioner under Gov. John Baldacci.
The committee in August will begin meeting to analyze current government departments and services and find ways to save money through consolidating functions and eliminating duplications, according to a memo from Finance Commissioner Sawin Millett. Agencies must submit savings proposals by Aug. 12, and the task force is required to present its recommendations by Dec. 15.
