Tech report: Maine losing ground

Maine dropped six places in a new report by the California-based Milken Institute that tracks states' performances in the science and technology sectors.

Maine fell from 33rd to 39th in the State Technology and Science Index since the last index was completed in 2004, according to the report, which uses 77 indicators to determine how well a state promotes economic development in science and technology. The report ranked states in five categories, including workforce and research and development.

Though Maine's overall ranking dropped, the state did improve in two categories. Maine jumped from 22nd to 14th in the risk capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure category, and moved four spots in the technology cluster development category, from 45th to 41st.
