E. Millinocket mill switches to biomass

Katahdin Paper Co.'s mill in East Millinocket over the past week switched from an oil-burning to a biomass boiler, saving money and offering a model of how to save its sister mill in Millinocket, the Bangor Daily News reports today.

Officials at the mill told the paper yesterday the switch is "a major step toward profitability" and could be replicated at the mill in Millinocket, which company officials said in late May would be shuttered, and its 208 workers laid off, due to high oil prices. "It reinforces the fact that we can be a lot more profitable if we put a boiler in Millinocket," mill spokesman Glenn Saucier told the Daily News.

The mills use the boilers to create steam, which is critical for making paper. Last year, the Millinocket mill, which makes paper for magazines and catalogs, used more than 400,000 barrels of oil in its boiler, the paper said.
