An Aroostook County economic development organization will receive nearly $2 million in federal funds to advance a renewable energy cluster.
The Northern Maine Development Commission has been awarded $1.9 million through the Obama administration's $37 million Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge, a multi-agency competition announced in May designed to support 20 high-growth clusters nationwide, according to a press release. The grant will fund the "GreenME" project, which aims to transition 9,000 residences and 20 businesses to wood biomass fuel over four years and is expected to create more than 400 jobs in Washington and Aroostook counties, the Bangor Daily News reported. According to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, 55 Maine businesses are partnering in the project.
The funding will be allocated through the federal Economic Development Administration, the Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.
