Residents of Waterford on Monday became the third community in the state to oppose the possible reversal of a Montreal-to-South Portland crude oil pipeline that is needed to transport Canadian tar sands south.
The Bangor Daily News reported that residents voted 56-34 at Waterford's annual town meeting to oppose any proposal by the Portland Pipe Line Corp. to reverse the flow of the 236-mile pipeline that runs through the town.
Two other towns along the pipeline's route, Casco and Bethel, have passed similar resolutions.
Larry Wilson, Portland Pipe Line Corp. CEO, told the voters that the company looks forward to further discussions around potential future use of the pipeline.
Last week, U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud joined a group of congressional officials in sending a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry requesting that any proposal to reverse the existing pipeline require a presidential permit and new environmental impact statement.
