This award-winning chef is eliminating tips at her two restaurants

If you visit either the Bao Bao Dumpling House in Portland or Tao Yuan in Brunswick after Nov. 30, you’ll notice a familiar part of your bill will be missing: the line for tips.

That's because chef Cara Stadler announced that her eateries will eliminate tipping. She and Chris Peterman, director of operations, told the Portland Press Herald that an 18% service charge will automatically be added to a customer’s pre-tax bill. Under the new system, front-of-house positions like servers and bartenders will be getting paid hourly, depending on their experience. Cooks will also be seeing a bump in their pay.

Peterman told the Press eHerald that currently there are no plans to increase menu prices. He also said the new system will allow the restaurants to expand their employee benefits.
