In its second such initiative this year, Thomas College has launched an employer partner program to provide discounts on the cost of degree programs for working adults.

The Waterville college is teaming up with paper manufacturer Sappi North America to provide employees with a free graduate course for the 2022-23 school year, followed by classes offered at a 10% tuition discount.

In March, Thomas provided the same deal to employees of Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

The school says its Employer Preferred Education Partnership program can broaden professional development opportunities to help advance current employees and cultivate new talent.

Thomas College in Waterville said its discounted education programs help companies advance current employees and cultivate talent.

The partnership also adds to Sappi’s benefit package, Dale Wibberly, the company’s human resources manager, said in a news release.

“This opportunity allows Sappi employees to further their education and gain new skills at free and discounted rates, and it provides them with the flexibility to complete their coursework at a pace that fits with their busy lifestyle,” Wibberly said.

Sappi North America, headquartered in Boston, has packaging and specialty paper operations in Skowhegan and Westbrook.

Sappi North America, is a subsidiary of Sappi Ltd. (JSE: SAP), a global wood-fiber company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa. Sappi Ltd. has more than 12,000 employees, manufacturing operations on three continents in seven countries, and customers in over 150 countries.

The partnership between Sappi and Thomas College is “a synergistic relationship,” said Kristina Lilley, Thomas College's assistant director of graduate recruiting.

“Our students from Sappi continuously bring great contributions to our virtual classrooms,” Lilley said. “Their hands-on experience from Sappi helps to broaden the classroom perspectives and knowledge, and they can apply the course curriculum in their daily workplace.”

Thomas College offers several online graduate programs and certificates of advanced study designed for adults and working professionals. An online MBA program also offers optional concentration areas fields such as cybersecurity and health care management.

Jaime Sayers, associate human resource generalist for Sappi North America, completed her MBA-Human Resource Management degree at Thomas this month.

“This degree has already enriched my career,” Sayers said. “All the courses have been relevant to everyday practices in the office.”
