Thomas College plans major expansion

Thomas College in Waterville yesterday unveiled a new master plan that includes nearly doubling the size of its campus to accommodate its growing enrollment.

The college wants to build a dozen buildings, including five new residence halls and a new library, as well as grow its current 70-acre footprint with new athletic fields, according to the Morning Sentinel. Officials from the college, Harriman Architects and Engineers and Boston-based planning firm Cecil Group presented the master plan to students, facility and staff for feedback, describing it as "flexible," with a timeline of potentially many years. The project is broken down into four stages, each of which would be triggered by hitting an enrollment threshold. The last phase would occur when the school reached 1,200-1,400 full-time students, about double its full-time enrollment of 705 this past fall, according to the paper. Thomas serves about 1,000 students total through day classes and part-time evening courses.

Last summer, Thomas spent about $250,000 to renovate its welcome center and some classrooms in its main academic building. No price has been determined for future work, but it would be financed through fundraising, tax-exempt bonds and the college's surplus money. The master plan will be presented to the college's board of trustees later this month.
