Three of the state's hospitals signed deals with natural gas providers this week in an effort to cut fuel costs.
Boston-based Xpress Natural Gas announced today it signed a deal to provide trucked natural gas to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, building toward the company's expectation of displacing 30 million gallons of heating oil or propane use in the state by the end of this year.
Separately, Summit Natural Gas of Maine announced inking deals to provide pipeline natural gas to Inland Hospital in Waterville and Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan, part of the company's construction of around 130 miles of natural gas pipelines in the Kennbec Valley.
Representatives from each of the hospitals said they made the decision to save money. XNG said in a prepared statement that its new customer in Caribou plans to recover its investment in converting to natural gas in two-and-a-half years and then begin saving around $250,000 annually.
The companies did not disclose the length of the new contracts.
