Brunswick Executive Airport and two other Maine airports are receiving nearly $8.9 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration for various improvements.
The grant funding was announced in separate announcements by U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree and U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King over the weekend.
Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle will receive a $3 million grant from the FAA to rehabilitate the “apron” section, a parking area where aircraft are loaded, unloaded, refueled and undergo maintenance, Sens. Collins and King announced this past weekend.
“Regional and other small airports are gateways for our businesses and play a fundamental role in the continued development of our most rural regions,” King and Collins said in a joint statement. “This funding will help Presque Isle make necessary improvements to ensure that the airport continues to operate safely.”
The Robert LaFleur Airport in Waterville will receive a $4.3 million grant from the FAA to reconstruct an aging, 5,500-foot runway, with construction expected to begin next spring, Pingree said Monday. Brunswick Executive Airport will receive $1.5 million in grants for the construction of a snow removal equipment building.
“Both of these airports are making exciting contributions to Maine’s economy,” Pingree said in a prepared statement. “Recent renovations at LaFleur Airport and its status as a foreign trade zone have strengthened its attractiveness to businesses. Brunswick Executive Airport is offering important services to the innovative hub of businesses developing on the former naval base. These federal investments will help the airports keep up the momentum while improving operations and providing work to local contractors.”
