After two years of construction, the Three Ring Binder project has been completed six months ahead of schedule. The 1,100-mile network provides high-speed broadband access across the state to more than 100,000 households in 100 rural communities.
The network, considered the backbone for high-speed service, was completed June 30, ahead of the Dec. 31 goal, according to the Portland Press Herald. Internet service providers and telecommunications companies must build out the so-called "last mile" connections from the network to homes and businesses. The project, overseen by Maine Fiber Co., also came in within its $31.7 million budget. Biddeford-based GWI led the initiative to raise $7 million needed to match a $25.4 million stimulus grant for the project, which Maine received in December 2009.
So far, about a dozen customers are connected, and twice that many are negotiating for access, the paper reported. When fully built out, the network will serve 600 schools and other institutions, as well as 38 government facilities. It gives Maine its first high-speed link to Boston and Halifax.
