Time Warner outage affects 350,000

About 350,000 people and businesses in New England were left without Time Warner Internet and digital phone service yesterday when a fiber-optic cable in Vermont failed.

Flooding from Tropical Storm Irene knocked out the backup cable near Brattleboro, Vt., along the Connecticut River, crashing Time Warner's network around 2:30 p.m., according to the Portland Press Herald. Time Warner was using the backup cable because the primary line had been knocked out during the weekend's storm. Time Warner customers in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts were left without Internet and phone service, and experienced problems with cable television.

Time Warner engineers restored services around 6 p.m.
