The owner of a controversial topless doughnut shop in Vassalboro hopes to turn it into a strip club.
Donald Crabtree plans to apply for a new town permit to expand the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop's capacity from 21 to 300 seats, acquire an entertainment license for a strip club, and expand its hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to 1 a.m, according to the Kennebec Journal. Since the Feb. 23 opening of the business on Route 3, Crabtree told the paper the shop has had "lines out the door" and that he has been warned by the town's code enforcement officer for exceeding the shop's seating capacity. The coffee shop features topless waitresses and waiters serving coffee and doughnuts.
Meanwhile, the town board of selectmen is considering an ordinance to ban adult entertainment, including nudity in a business place, the paper reported. The coffee shop would not be affected by the nudity ban because it has already received a town permit, but Crabtree's plans for a strip club would be affected.
