Trader Joe's files for Portland licenses

Specialty food retailer Trader Joe's is seeking licenses to operate in the city of Portland at a former Wild Oats store.

The California-based grocery store chain has applied for licenses to provide food service and sell beer and wine, according to the Portland Press Herald. News of the company's intentions to locate in Portland first surfaced in March, when it filed documents with the Federal Trade Commission to buy the former Wild Oats property on Marginal Way. The FTC still must approve the sale, as part of a settlement between the commission and Whole Foods Market Inc., which purchased Wild Oats in 2007. The FTC said the acquisition violated antitrust laws and called for Whole Foods to lease 19 closed Wild Oats stores, including the Portland location.

The Portland store would be the first Trader Joe's in Maine.
