Tribe to disburse $10M settlement among members

The Passamaquoddy Tribe has decided to split evenly among its members a $10.2 million settlement the tribe received from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the result of a 2006 lawsuit filed against the department by 60 Native American tribes around the country.

Each of the approximately 3,500 tribal members will receive about $2,900, according to the Bangor Daily News. People are expected to receive their checks later this week. The total settlement was $11.4 million, but legal expenses reduced it to the current amount.

The federal government allegedly mismanaged assets of the country's tribes, including $13.5 million allocated to the Passamaquoddy Tribe in 1980 through the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act.
