A plan to spend $28 million to renovate the Cumberland County Civic Center received the support of its board of trustees yesterday.
The renovation plan, recommended to the board last month by a task force studying the center, includes building new premium seating, revamping concession offerings and upgrading backstage facilities. The trustees approved the plan, as long as county voters next November approve a bond to pay for the renovation, according to the Portland Press Herald. A building committee will also be appointed to determine an actual price tag for the work, since the $28 million figure is an estimate provided by consultants The Goldwater Group and Brailsford and Dunlavey, which filed their report on renovation plans in August.
At yesterday's meeting, the trustees also rejected a request by developer Jason Snyder that the county and city provide $85,000 to pay consultants to determine if his plan for a new arena in Westbrook or Portland is viable, according to the paper. Snyder has been pitching his plan for a $60 million-plus arena and a $30 million renovation of the civic center to turn it into a convention center, but trustees said his proposal lacked important details.
