Two bays closed for scallop harvesting

The Maine Department of Marine Resources has closed two bays in Washington County for scallop harvesting, saying the resource faced “risk of unusual damage and imminent depletion.”

The Mount Desert Islander reported that Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Kelleher announced on Friday the emergency closures of Pleasant Bay and Lower Englishman Bay.

“The department is concerned that unrestricted harvesting during the remainder of the 2014-15 fishing season in these areas may deplete a severely diminished resource beyond its ability to recover,” according to the department.
