SOUTH PORTLAND — A Portland bakery is leasing the 1,224 square feet vacated when Saco-based Fernleaf Bakery closed its South Portland location at 740 Broadway earlier this year.
Two Fat Cats bakery opened a second location last week in the space occupied by Fernleaf for two years. Two Fat Cats, owned by South Portland resident Stacy Begin, will keep its India Street location.
In a news release, Begin cited the seating and free parking as benefits of the South Portland location. She said the bakery was looking to expand, and the former bakery site was a good fit. Fernleaf's bakery and coffee shop at 20 Free St. in Saco remains open.
Two Fat Cats bakery employs 15.
“It’s been an unbelievable adventure to see this business succeed,” Begin said “The India Street shop is close to our hearts as our first location, but in order to grow, we needed to recognize that India Street had reached its capacity, and we want more people to have the opportunity to experience our line of baked goods.”
She also looks forward to becoming a business partner in the South Portland community.
“Building relationships in the community is really something we strive for and embrace, and something for which I feel tremendous pride,” she said. “I’m also really proud of my employees. They care tremendously about their work. It’s a pleasure to come to work each day. I am very lucky.”
Fernleaf opened at the site in January 2016, and closed around the same time this year.
