Two lawyers head to jail

Two southern Maine lawyers yesterday were sentenced for stealing money from clients.

Thomas Acker, a Hollis man disbarred in 2006, was sentenced to 33 months in prison after pleading guilty in the Cumberland Country Superior Court to charges stemming from bilking his friends and clients out of more than $2 million between 2000 and 2004, the Portland Press Herald reported. He had a small law office in Falmouth.

A Superior Court judge yesterday also sentenced former Verrill Dana law partner John Duncan of Falmouth to 28 months in prison for stealing roughly $300,000 from his clients and the Portland firm over the past decade. Duncan will serve the sentence concurrently with a 28-month federal sentence that he received earlier this month for charges of tax evasion.
