Spectrum Medical Group, with offices in South Portland and Bangor, and OA Centers for Orthopaedics in Portland have merged to form a health care company with more than 200 physicians and health care provider staff. They said the deal, first explored one year ago, makes the joined entity the largest non-hospital affiliated health care organization in the state.
The two health care providers said in a press release they will continue to operate under their respective names. John Wipfler, OA’s CEO, said in a statement that “scale is necessary” for a health care organization to remain viable, but the merger aims to preserve the basic structure of the physician-led practices.
Dr. Daniel Landry, anesthesiologist and chairman of Spectrum’s board of directors, said in the release that the merger will help the organization develop new approaches to improving care.
The two practices have collaborated before, forming an association of independent specialty practices called Specialty Solutions in 2011.
Clarification: A previous version did not specify that the merged company would have 200 physicians and health care provider staff. That count does not include all of Spectrum and OA's staff.
