Two Portland-based architectural firms received awards from the New England Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at its annual meeting in Providence, R.I., on Oct. 1.
Caleb Johnson Studio, a design, construction and millwork company, was recognized for a residential project called Pieri Pines. During the project, the studio sought to re-envision a local cabin in Otisfield on Thompson Lake in collaboration with three brothers, their families and Bartow Construction.
“It was an absolute pleasure to be recognized for a simple building that accomplishes so much with inexpensive natural materials and a bold design,” said Caleb Johnson.
Caleb Johnson Studio manages residential and commercial projects throughout New England and is affiliated with the construction and millwork company Woodhull.
Simons Architects received an award for Waynflete Lower School. The private school project was designed to integrate preschool through fifth grade and organize around a new central lobby and atrium that runs right through the middle of the building. The additions connect the upper-level playground at the front entrance with the lower-level playfield behind the building.
“The design process included valuable input from members of Waynflete’s building committee, teachers, administrators and operations staff to create a unique building that reflected the special qualities of their school and community,” said Julia Tate, project architect at Simons Architects.
Simons Architects is known in the industry for innovative solutions to design challenges, with a guiding principle to create spaces of beauty and substance.
The New England Design Awards program, which represents eight AIA chapters throughout New England, celebrates regional architects and architecture.
