UMA proposes 4% tuition hike

The University of Maine at Augusta plans to propose a 4% tuition increase to offset a drop in state aid.

The university will present the increase today to a University of Maine System committee, which is doing a first review of each of the seven campuses' tuition plans, according to the Kennebec Journal. UMA's annual cost for a student taking a full course load would rise from $6,000 to $6,240, helping to make up for a drop in state aid, which decreased system-wide by about $7 million between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years, UMA President Allyson Hughes Handley told the paper. However, Gov. John Baldacci announced in March that the system will receive $194 million for the 2010-2011 year, a $6 million increase over the previous academic year.

The UMS committee will make a final decision regarding the tuition increase at its May 23-24 meeting. Handley told the paper the school will hand out additional financial aid and help more students take advantage of federal financial aid. It also plans to hire eight full-time faculty members.
