UMaine finishes test for Spanish wind firm
The University of Maine’s Offshore Wind Laboratory has completed testing of a 184-foot wind turbine blade for a Spain-based wind energy company, its largest project yet.
UMaine announced on Tuesday that its offshore wind lab completed static strength testing of the blade for Gamesa. The blade's strength was tested by subjecting it to wind loads in four directions, ensuring that it meets international strength standards. The wind lab is part of the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center
“We are honored to have served one of the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturers,” Habib Dagher, director of the UMaine center, said in a prepared statement. “This is the biggest structure we have tested to date, extending nearly 80% of the length of our blade test lab.”
Juan Diego Diaz, marketing director for Gamesa, said, “North America was a logical place to conduct this important step in our product development, supporting our growing commercial opportunities in that region and globally.“
He added, “We were impressed by the testing quality, safety and attention to detail provided by the UMaine team in successfully testing our blade.”
