UMaine mulls staff, program cuts

The University of Maine is considering eliminating several majors as part of a plan to cut more than $12.2 million from the school's academic affairs budget.

The plan, released Wednesday, would result in 80 fewer faculty positions by 2014, according to the Bangor Daily News. It also calls for a reduction in undergraduate majors from 86 to 70 and the number of master's degrees would decrease from 64 to 58. The eliminated majors would include women's studies, French, Spanish, German, Latin, theater and music. The proposal also calls for the elimination of distinct bachelor's degrees in aquaculture, wood science, forest operations and forest ecosystems science-conservation, according to the paper. "We cannot count on new revenues, so we must continue aggressively planning for program reductions and other efficiencies," University of Maine President Robert Kennedy said in a release.

The proposed changes come from a preliminary report from the Academic Program Prioritization Working Group, known as APPWG. The group plans to make a final report by April 8, which will then go to Kennedy for a decision.
