UMaine nabs $1.2M DOE grant

The University of Maine has been awarded a $1.2 million federal grant to improve technology for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Partnering with Environetix of Orono, a company that develops wireless sensor technologies, the university will use the Department of Energy grant to improve sensor devices that can withstand high heat levels, for potential use in power plants, according to the Bangor Daily News. The sensors could alert mechanics to possible equipment failures, avoiding costly shutdowns, as well as monitor plants' efficiency to reduce the release of carbon dioxide, the paper reported.

The technology has already drawn interest from the U.S. Air Force, which looked into installing the sensors in jet engines, and engine makers including Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce.
