Smart meter ruling stands

The Maine Public Utilities Commission upheld its ruling Tuesday allowing Central Maine Power Co.'s controversial smart meters program, even as another complaint is filed by consumers opposed to the electronic devices.

The PUC refused to reconsider its earlier decisions regarding smart meters and additionally ruled this week that CMP must notify all its customers in the next billing cycle about the benefits of the wireless monitors and their right to opt out of the program if they choose, according to the Forecaster. The opt-out provision came in response to health and privacy concerns related to smart meters raised by consumers. CMP now allows consumers to use alternative monitoring devices for a monthly fee.

The new complaint, filed Aug. 1, cites a World Health Organization study of on-ionizing radio frequency primarily in cell phone use. Commissioners declined to reconsider their ruling in light of the WHO study, according to the report.
