UMaine nets $1.3M ag grant

The University of Maine has received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to boost organic bread wheat production in the state.

The grant, part of a nationwide USDA program totaling $19 million, will fund research to determine which wheat varieties grow best in Maine and how to prevent disease, according to the Bangor Daily News. The USDA announced last week that Maine would receive some kind of funding, but did not specify the amount. UMaine's sustainable agriculture program will share the funding with the University of Vermont, and 10 researchers at the two universities will work on the project, which also includes developing resources for farmers to help them grow wheat.

The grant was announced at Borealis Breads in Portland, which uses locally produced organic wheat for its breads, according to the paper.
