UMaine nets $1M grant for wind energy research

The University of Maine has received a $1 million National Science Foundation grant to support the design and development of a wind and wave generating system, called W2, that can simulate conditions in the Gulf of Maine and elsewhere.

U.S. Sen. Angus King said in a press release that the grant will allow the university to advance its study of offshore wind power.

In May, university researchers launched a one-eighth-scale offshore wind turbine in the Gulf of Maine as part of a pilot project in collaboration with a coalition of Maine companies.
