UMaine wins $500K research grant

The University of Maine is receiving more than $500,000 from the National Science Foundation to further its prosthetic research.

In a joint press release, U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said the $512,736 grant will support the university's development of a prosthetic robotic hand for people with hand disabilities, including amputees returning from war. "The potential for breakthrough technologies and research at Maine's colleges and universities is great and will help serve to boost our state's economy in the years to come," said Snowe and Collins in the release.

The National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency with an annual budget of about $6.9 billion, according to its website. NSF doles out more than 11,500 new funding awards each year.
