The University of Maine at Farmington yesterday unveiled a new business degree program for students interested in the recreation and tourism fields.
Taking advantage of its location in the heart of Maine's western mountains, UMF will offer a bachelor of arts degree in outdoor recreation business administration in the fall of 2010, according a press release from the university. The degree program will focus on business management and outdoor recreation tourism and offer internship opportunities at some of Maine's outdoor recreation and tourism companies. The university collaborated with an advisory board of people in the outdoor recreation industry to shape the program's curriculum.
The program is designed to complement the state's tourism industry, which generated one of every five sales dollars and one in every six Maine jobs in 2006, according to the Maine State Planning Office. "Maine's competitive advantage lies in preparing our students to be the most qualified industry professionals offering the best in outdoor recreational opportunities," Frank Engert, a business professor at UMF, said in a statement.
