NewPage plans Rumford restart

Two idled processes that feed paper machines at Rumford's NewPage mill are expected to start again by the new year.

Sharon Burgess, a union official with Local 900, told the Sun Journal that the operations that unload and chip logs should be running at 50% capacity by January. The yard closed down those sections of the mill last winter to save money.

The process supplies chips to the No. 10 paper machine, which has been shut down since mid September, and the No. 15 machine, which resumed full-time operations a few weeks ago, according to the paper.

The unloading and chipping operations will provide work for 30 to 35 employees. The volatile paper market has resulted in temporary lay-offs and machine shutdowns at the mill for the past year.
