UMF trustees OK $1.5M geothermal project

The University of Maine Farmington plans to install 80 geothermal wells on campus this year, marking the university's largest such project.

The Portland Press Herald reported the University of Maine Board of trustees has approved spending $1.55 million for the project that will add to the campuses' effort to reach zero carbon emissions by 2035.

A University of Maine System report estimates the project will cut 354 tons of carbon emissions from burning heating oil, approximately the quantity of emissions from 67 passenger cars over a year.

The latest project is expected to heat and cool more than 50,000 square feet of campus facilities.

The project is the fourth campus project using geothermal technology, which exchanges air at relatively stable temperatures underground to cool buildings in the summer and heat buildings in the winter.
