Flowers set to get Hostess breads, Biddeford bakery

Flowers Foods Inc. has been selected as the high bidder on six Hostess bread brands and 20 of the bankrupt company's bakeries, including a plant in Biddeford.

The Journal Tribune reported that the purchase now awaits review by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York, which is scheduled to review the bid on March 19.

Company officials expect that regulatory review of the sale could take several more months. John Jordan, a bakery union representative, told the paper that he hopes Flowers will reopen the Biddeford bakery shuttered in November.

Jordan told the paper that "a great majority" of the nearly 370 workers who lost their jobs in the closure that followed Hostess' bankruptcy continue to look for work.

In February, the U.S. Department of Labor ruled that those workers, part of 18,000 Hostess employees nationwide, will be eligible for special assistance for workers whose jobs were lost as a result of trade-related factors.
