UMPI president to step down

University of Maine at Presque Isle President Don Zillman plans to step down at the end of this academic year to return to teaching.

Zillman, who has served as president of the university since 2006, will resign in the spring of 2012 to teach at the University of Maine School of Law, according to the Bangor Daily News. Zillman previously served as tenured Edward S. Godfrey Professor of Law, and his option to return to that job expires June 30, 2012. He told the paper he felt it was the right time for new leadership at the school. During his tenure, UMPI undertook efforts to become a greener campus, erecting a wind turbine, installing a biomass boiler and solar panels, and offering energy courses.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees will review his resignation Sept. 19 and form a committee to search for a new president by the summer of 2012.
