Attorney Julio Vincent DeSanctis III, a prominent figure in the Bangor legal community, has died at the age of 67 after a nine-year battle with cancer.
DeSanctis had a solo practice in the area for more than 30 years and was known for being a fierce advocate for his clients, according to the Bangor Daily News. He also earned a reputation for sharing his knowledge with new lawyers and a "champion of the underdog," according to his obituary. "In what could only be described as a ravenous desire for justice - and perhaps a bit of just always wanting to be right - Julio stood head and shoulders above the crowd," his family wrote in the obituary. A New Jersey native, DeSanctis began his law practice in the late 1960s in San Francisco before returning to New Jersey, where he worked to put narcotics addicts into rehabilitation programs instead of in jail. In Orrington, the family opened a small convenience store and pizza shop before DeSanctis established his home law office. The family later moved to Old Town.
DeSanctis also taught Sunday school at Old Town United Methodist Church and Stillwater Federated Church, where his wife, Joan, is a pastor. In 2008, he unsuccessfully ran for state Senate.
