UMS curbs spending

The University of Maine System has instituted a number of spending controls in response to a slight decline in student enrollment and the impact of the global financial crisis on the university system.

Chancellor Richard Pattenaude yesterday said in a press release that the spending measures include restrictions on filling vacancies, deferring discretionary salary increases and minimizing travel, printing, mailing, employee overtime and purchases at all seven campuses and the system's centralized offices.
