UMS opens credit-transfer website

The University of Maine System has launched a new website to help students transfer credits to count toward degree programs at the state's seven universities.

The Portland Press Herald reported the website is part of an initiative to make transfers from the Maine Community College System into the University of Maine System easier. The new website will also allow people who have taken courses at other institutions to enter information about those classes to see how those credits could be counted toward different majors within the university system.

UMS says that around 230,000 Mainers have taken some college courses but did not complete a degree program. Meanwhile, an increasing number of students are coming as transfers into the university system. University officials attribute the increasing use of the less costly path to a degree to lingering effects of the economic recession.
