Call gets louder for details of UMaine wind proposal

The two chairmen of the committee overseeing energy issues in the Legislature have joined a chorus of interested parties asking for the University of Maine or the Maine Public Utilities Commission to release details of the university’s 100-page proposal for an offshore wind power pilot project.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Sen. John Cleveland, D-Auburn, and Rep. Barry Hobbins, D-Saco, have sent a letter to PUC officials asking for the commission to release at least part of the university’s proposal. The legislators are joining other parties that have requested the release of all or part of the proposal. The paper reported that requests to see the proposal under the state’s Freedom of Access Act were denied Friday. The PUC told requesters that the documents are confidential and protected from public view under a protective order.

Advocates for granting public access to the proposal argue that more details are needed to compare the benefits of the proposal from the university-led consortium against a proposal from the Norwegian energy company Statoil. The PUC approved the Statoil pilot project in January.
