UMS, union agreement could prevent layoffs

More than 2,000 University of Maine System employees could take two days without pay to avoid other layoffs before June 30.

The University of Maine System and the employee union yesterday reached a tentative agreement that could send more than 2,000 clerical and professional staff on a two-day furlough to save the system $1.2 million before June 30, according to the Portland Press Herald. Union members will vote on the furlough agreement within the next three weeks.

If the furlough agreement is approved, UMS Chancellor Richard Pattenaude said there would be no additional layoffs through June, the paper said. Union leaders said the furlough agreement would avoid the layoffs of about 100 clerical staff members in March.
