UNE dental facility wins Portland board OK

The Portland Planning Board yesterday approved the University of New England's proposal for a $14.5 million Patient Care Facility, part of its new College of Dental Medicine expected to start up in 2013.

The 38,000-square-foot center on Stevens Avenue and College Street would have a total of 40 faculty and staff, and serve 138 students and 12,000 patients a year, according to the Portland Press Herald. The university plans to build a 300-space parking lot to address traffic and parking issues brought up by area residents. UNE hopes to begin construction in July, once it receives a building permit from the city.

James Koelbl, founding dean of the dental college, said the building will be "one of the most modern dental facilities in the state of Maine," and would include training dummies as well as space for students to practice on real patients. Port City Architecture designed the building, and Allied Cook Construction of Portland would build it.

UNE also recently signed an agreement to open a new campus in Morocco.
