On "Match Day" for medical students, aspiring doctors in Maine at MaineHealth Medical Center's Maine Track program with Tufts University at the University of New England learned where they will be completing their residency training.

Match Day is a milestone for medical students nationwide. It marks the moment when fourth-year students learn where they will complete their residencies.

“Every physician has a distinct memory of their Match Day,” said Dena Whitesell, assistant dean for students in the TUSM-MHMMC Maine Track program. “It is a big moment for doctors professionally and personally, and it’s always wonderful to see the support our students receive from their families, friends and mentors as they find out where they’ll be taking the next step in their careers.”

At the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Maine Track program with Tufts, 41 students in this year's class were matched to a high-quality program, with 11 starting in Portland as residents at MaineHealth.

The Maine Track program is a partnership between MHMMC Portland and Tufts formed 17 years ago to help address Maine's doctor shortage, provide financial assistance to aspiring medical students and develop an innovative curriculum focused on community-based education.

To date, 439 physicians have graduated from the Maine Track program.

UNE's Match Day

The University of New England held its Match Day last Friday at its new Portland campus for the Health Sciences, which is expected to open this summer.

Around 50% of students were matched into primary care fields, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and OB-GYN. UNE students also secured placements in high-demand specialties such as surgery, dermatology, and emergency medicine.

“You’re entering a field that desperately needs you. Our world needs you,” Herbert said at Match Day. “I see so much talent in (you) and it gives me a great deal of optimism for the future. You’re going to have produced a profound impact on people’s lives … and I am I’m pleased that so many of you will be staying in Maine for your residencies.”
