UNE dental school opens to class of 64

Maine’s first dental school, at the University of New England, opened Wednesday with an inaugural class of 64 students.

The Portland Press Herald reported the university expects that in its fourth year, students will begin to serve clinics throughout New England. In the short term, faculty members and students will treat up to 15,000 patients a year in Portland and 25,000 through a community-based network.

The inaugural class includes 24 students from Maine, five from New Hampshire and four from Vermont.
