UNE program gets $1M grant

The University of New England has received a federal grant of $990,000 to fund its physician assistant program at its Westbrook College of Health Professions.

The five-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Affordable Care Act will help expand the program by offering $22,000 in annual tuition reimbursement to each of the five additional students accepted into the program each year over the life of the grant, according to a press release from the university. Preference will be given to students interested in primary care practice in the state of Maine.

The expansion also includes a partnership with the Penobscot Community Health Center and St. Joseph Hospital, both in Bangor, that allows students to spend one year of their two-year master's level program at UNE, then relocate to Bangor for the second year, according to the release.
