UNE to stop operating health centers

The University of New England plans to cease in November operation of its six community health clinics in Portland, Saco and Biddeford.

A spokeswoman said UNE is working with Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford to have the center take over the clinics, which serve thousands of Mainers, the Portland Press Herald reported. The 90 doctors, nurses, faculty members and other staffers of University Health Care were told last month that their jobs will end Nov. 2. Two student health clinics run by University Health Care won't be affected.

The spokeswoman said UNE decided to stop operating the clinics as part of a new clinical operational model that better aligns with its educational mission, the paper reported. University Health Care also provides training opportunities for UNE's 500 medical school students, and for students at another 20 schools in New England. The university's accreditation will not be affected by the change, the spokeswoman told the paper.
