Unemployment drops to 6.4% in November

The number of out-of-work job seekers dropped to 6.4% in November, down from 6.7% in October and 7.2% in the previous year.

According to preliminary estimates, the Maine Department of Labor reported it estimates 45,500 people were unemployed in November, down 5,400 since the start of 2013. Nationally, the unemployment rate for November was estimated at 7.0%, down from 7.3% in October and 7.8% one year ago.

The Maine DOL reported that the share of the total population in the work force continued to outpace national trends, with 61.2% of Mainers employed in November. Nationally, 58.6% of the population was employed during the same period.

Maine’s unemployment rate remained lower than the regional average of 6.9%. Maine had a lower unemployment rate in November than Massachusetts (7.1%), Rhode Island (9.0%), Connecticut (7.6%) and a higher rate than New Hampshire (5.1%) and Vermont (4.4%).
