The startup insurer Maine Community Health Options has attracted nearly three-fourths of Mainers signing up for individual health care plans through a federal website in October and November.
The Bangor Daily News reported 73% of Mainers buying insurance through healthcare.gov chose a plan with MCHO over its lone competitor, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicated about 1,750 Maine residents bought insurance through the federal exchange. Kevin Lewis, MCHO’s CEO, told the paper that federal data showed 1,268 people enrolled in one of his nonprofit’s plans for the same time period.
The paper reported that Anthem declined to reveal its enrollment figures. Emily Cooke, an attorney specializing in the Affordable Care Act at the Portland firm Pierce Atwood, told the paper that it is too early to draw conclusions from the enrollment totals. A small sample size, possible errors in data collection methods and a remaining four months of open enrollment for the exchange plans could change the final makeup of the individual exchange market, she said.
